A few months ago I decided to treat myself to a new fountain pen and decided to buy one from the Cross range. The Cross Century II fountain pen that I bought came in black and gold with a glossy lacquer finish.  As pens go it’s a fairly thin pen the feels really good in the hand.  However, I prefer to use it without the cap attached as it feels more unbalanced in my hand with it on.  I feel this is due to the fact that this is a Brass pen covered in lacquer, which accounts for the weight.

The nib is gold plated, being decorated with some elegant etched lines.  The pen I chose came with an extra find nib which on first use didn’t quite feel right.  This could be due to the fact that this is the first extra fine I have used.  I didn’t find it scratchy, but there was a feel of friction.  After using it for a period of time I did get used to it and it always laid down a nice wet, steady line.  The ink is supplied using either proprietary cartridges or a screw in converter.

I do feel the part of my problem with using his pen is the extra fine nib.  I actually got this pen for less than so really can’t complain too much, but next time I would definitely go for a medium nib.  What really works in this pen is its weight and shape.  It has classic styling and really does sit well in your hand.
