Traditionally, car headlamp bulbs have always given out a beam of yellowish light, generated by a tungsten or halogen filament bulb. In years gone by, it was popular to create a “sealed beam” unit including the glass lens as part of a large, single component, while more recently there has been a move towards creating a bulb, separate from the lens assembly.

However today, an increasing number of new cars are being fitted with a superior light source, most easily noticed by the fact that the headlights on these models deliver a much more white or blue-white light, generally of greater intensity.

These new headlight bulbs are called high intensity discharge (HID) bulbs, and in contrast with the type of bulb we are used to, which has a delicate filament at its heart, these new bulbs create light by the discharge between two electrodes. HID light bulbs typically use xenon as the gas which surrounds the active elements that create the light.

Depending on the manufacturer, some HID xenon light bulbs give out a pure white light. Alternatively, others have a blue tinge to the light, while some provide a white light with a yellow edge.

Not only is the colour of the light different, but HID light bulbs have a number of other distinct advantages. They usually produce around three times the light output of a regular car light bulb, while consuming no more power.

While currently HID xenon lamps are only fitted to more expensive cars, it is easy to obtain the advantages of extra brightness on just about any car, by fitting a HID conversion kit. This includes the HID bulb, along with the equipment required to provide the appropriate voltage to the new bulb. It’s a simple step to take in order to dramatically improve your vehicle’s lighting, and your own road safety on dark nights.
