Stop Nail Biting Through Understanding

The clinical name for nail biting is onychophagia. This bad habit runs rampant in children between the ages of ten and eighteen. In fact, almost fifty percent of children in this age group admit that they have a habit of biting their nails. A parent that understands the motivation behind this habit will be able to give their child the tools necessary to stop nail biting.

Most children with this habit stop nail biting by the time they turn thirty. Others will continue biting their nails for the rest of their life unless they receive the help that they need in order to quit. For some, what began as a simple childhood habit can turn into an obsessive disorder that must be treated by a medical professional?

There many reasons why someone might bite their nails. The two reasons at the top of the list are boredom and anxiety. Identifying the reason that your child bites their nails will give you the edge that you need in order to get them to stop nail biting.

Stop Nail Biting Through Dialogue

A child that suddenly begins nail biting might be experiencing anxiety. Sit down with your child and have a quiet talk with them. Never berate a child for biting their nails this will only cause more stress and make matters worse.

Ask your child if anything new is going on at school. Sometimes the stress of a new class can make a child feel overwhelmed and trigger nervous habits like nail biting. Ask how things are with their friends. Things that might seem like nonsense to you can really upset your child. They see the world from a completely different perspective than you. Listen to what they have to say. Dont dismiss their feelings or tell them to get over their problems. You are their parent; it is up to you to help them rise above their problems.

If anxiety isnt the problem, boredom is most likely the culprit. Watch your child and take note of what activities are going on when they bite their nails. When you notice that they are nibbling, give them something to do with their hands. Busy fingers wont find their way into the mouth.

Stop Nail Biting Techniques that Work for Children

The best technique I have found to stop nail biting in young children is the bandage method. Let your child pick out a box of bandages with their favorite cartoon character on them. Place a bandage over each fingernail. Bandages create a barrier between nail and teeth that really works to stop nail biting.

Older girls often like using the glove method. Gloves also provide a barrier to protect the nails. They are a reminder not to bite every time the glove is brought to the mouth. Many girls love accessorizing with gloves. Unfortunately, the most commonly used technique used for older boys entails painting a foul tasting substance on the nails. It is an unpleasant experience, but it works to stop nail biting.

There are many toys on the market today that help promote good motor skills in young children. It is important that these abilities, both fine and gross motor skills, be developed through play as well as education. The bead maze toy is just one of the more popular products that have been around for a number of years. These mazes are considered to be a classic toy, and can help develop a child’s skills in a number of ways.

A wooden bead maze consists of different colored wires attached to a wood base. These strong wires are typically looped around one another to form a maze like look to the toy. Each strand of wire contains a number of colored beads that the child can move from one end of the wire to the other. Both ends are connected to the base so that no beads can be removed, which could possibly create a choking hazard. These bead mazes come in various sizes, as you can find some small enough to fit on a table top.

Others are large and come with their own set of legs to be used as a standalone toy.

Children who own a bead maze toy can benefit from playing with this item in many ways. It helps to develop fine motor skills as the child moves the beads from one side of the wire to another. If they are old enough, the can work on their counting as the beads are moved. School aged kids can practice addition and subtraction when moving the beads around on the toy. The different colors can also help toddlers with recognition of all the colors of the rainbow. Babies can also benefit from this toy, as the bright colors help them learn to focus on an object.

Not only does a bead maze provide many advantages for children, it can also be fun for the parents as well.

Many adults can remember having this toy when they were little. Getting in the floor and playing with the maze with their children can bring back some memories. It is also a fun educational tool that parents can use with their kids to help them develop on time.

As you can see, there are many benefits to purchasing a bead maze toy for a child. You can buy this toy for a baby and allow him/her to grow with the item. Infants up to school aged children can benefit from the features of these mazes. They help support a number of skills that a child needs to learn before they are old enough to go to school. Development is important during birth to 5 years of age, and a bead maze can help promote growth in kids.

Numerous studies have shown us that the act of playing is indeed an essential part of childhood. Play helps a child develop cognitive, social, language and motor skills in a fun and imaginative way. Childrens toys and games supplement a childs ability to interact with and explore the world around them. Fun, imaginative, creative and interactive childrens toys help youngsters explore social roles, expand language skills and foster creativity. Parents should always provide their children with toys that are educational, stimulating and creative so that these toys enhance their childs development.

Young children such as toddlers benefit most from childrens toys that help them build up their skills in every area since they are still at the point where they are acquiring these developmental skills. Toddlers benefit most from games that allow them to fine-tune their skills. They need toys that will enhance their fine and gross motor skills, language skills as well as their social skills.

Childrens toys such as building blocks, dress up kits, simple arts and crafts sets are great toys for toddlers. Toys that require a toddler to manipulate objects draw or paint using different tools, build things will help them develop their fine and gross motor skills. Childrens toys that require a toddler to pretend play either through dressing up or through imitation helps develop social and language skills. Certain childrens toys help toddlers develop cognitive skills such as reasoning skills, visual-spatial skills, numerical skills and more.

Toddlers are at a stage where they require support to develop skills in every area of development and this is why it is important for parents to provide their children with the right toys. When choosing toys for a toddler parents should remember to check if the toy is age appropriate and suited for the developmental level of the child. A toy that is too challenging for a child will not contribute to development but it will lead to frustration. The childrens toys should not only be interactive and colourful but it should contribute in some way to the toddlers development. Childrens toys should always be made out of the highest quality materials and should use materials that are safe and toxin free. To ensure that you invest in a product that is safe for your toddler buy brands that you know assure quality childrens toys.

Childrens toys are a great way to enhance and supplement your toddlers developmental skills and ensure that they are ready to take the next step. Parents who provide their toddlers with the correct childrens toys are investing in their childs future.

It’s a good feeling when you start earning a regular wage, as you are no longer reliant on your parents to buy you the things you want and need. Finally you feel as though you have some independence, and with that independence comes many choices and responsibilities. One of the main choices you will have to make is what to do with all your money you have been working so hard for.

Some people like to spend all their money as soon as they get it. These types of people who live from paycheck to paycheck, believe life is for living and so why not enjoy yourself while you can?

Other people like to save the majority of their money, because whilst they recognise that it is important to have fun now, it is equally important to have fun in the future, which is why they set aside a portion of their income each month so that they will have something to use later on.

Regardless of what you choose to do with your money, the fact remains that you will have to spend some it, as that is part of living an independent lifestyle where you support yourself rather than having other people support you.

Some of the major expenses you can expect to pay include:

Taxes

Tax is something you cannot avoid, so this is an expense you will have to pay and there is very little you can do about it.

Transportation Costs

If you own a car then this will be a major expense for you.

Not only do you have to pay for gas, but you also have to spend money on insurance and car maintenance. This can work out to be very expensive over the course of a year, although if you are able to use your car less, then you can significantly reduce this expense.

Food

Since we all need to eat food in order to survive, food is going to be a major expense for anyone.

However it can also be one of the easiest to reduce, providing you shop smartly and cook your own food. If you are on a budget, don’t eat out as this is a very expensive way to eat.

Rent/Mortgage

This is another common expense, and one you can do very little about. However if you are trying to reduce your expenses then you may be able to reduce your rent by downsizing and moving into more modest accommodation. If you currently own your home, the only option available to you apart from moving, is to pay off your mortgage within a short period of time. Although this may raise your expenses in the short term, in the long term you will end up spending less money on repaying your mortgage.
